The double bass dates from the early 16th century. In orchestras they lend force and a basic rhythmic structure; in jazz bands the instrument is played pizzicato i.e. the strings are plucked with the fingers rather than bowed as in an orchestra.

Over 200 concertos have been written for the double bass. Composers include Mozart, Schubert and Strauss.
